Message from EACS President Esteban Martínez. 40 Years of HIV in Europe: achievements, challenges, and the path forward on World AIDS Day

On this World AIDS Day, we pause to consider the past forty years of HIV in Europe, acknowledging both remarkable achievements and the hurdles that still lie ahead.

 

While we celebrate progress, we must also confront ongoing challenges including disparities in standards of care across Europe, persistent stigma and discrimination, high and unchanged rates of late diagnosis, war in Ukraine and treatment of migrant populations.

 

This year, we’re emerging from the success of our recent biennial Conference in Warsaw—the first face-to-face meeting after COVID. With a special focus on Eastern Europe and Ukraine, the Conference brought together the HIV community and the scientific community to ensure that the experiences of those we serve remain at the heart of our mission.

 

Our commitment to education and training grows stronger every year. We want to equip HIV clinicians, researchers, and other healthcare professionals with the knowledge to provide the best care possible to their patients. Well-established initiatives like YING, WAVE, HIV Summer School, and the Medical Exchange Programme, are joined by new projects such as an Diploma in HIV Medicine. It will contribute to the harmonisation of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies in the practice of HIV medicine across Europe and beyond.

Join the WAVE breastfeeding workshop

Join the 4th WAVE meeting on breastfeeding. This 90-minute workshop will be held on Tuesday, 26 September 18:00 CEST.


This time, the discussion will focus on the future steps of the WAVE project and its possible involvement in international initiatives concerning breastfeeding. Data from ISSOS and a presentation of a new intercontinental initiative are only two of the reasons to join the meeting.

Call for prescribers working in Poland for the GSK Poland scholarship

The European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS) is organising the 19th European AIDS Conference (EACS 2023) from 18-21 October 2023 in Warsaw, exactly 20 years after it was last organised here.

 

Under the theme "It's time to revisit!" the 19th European AIDS Conference will aim not only to revisit the Warsaw city, but also our goals and deliverables in the fight against HIV epidemic and co-infections.

 

EACS is committed to making the conference accessible to medical doctors and has received a scholarship grant from GSK Poland, providing 20 in-person registrations for prescribers working in Poland.

Applicants must:

 

  • Be a prescriber working in Poland
  • Work in the field of HIV
  • Show their commitment to sharing knowledge and experience acquired at the Conference with their peers

Applicants must submit the following documents:

  • A letter of motivation
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Abstract(s) submitted for the conference (if any)

Applications can also be submitted in Polish.

Call for speakers for the EATG mental health webinar

On 9 November, 2023 17:00 - 18:30 CET, The European AIDS Treatment Group (EATG) will host the webinar "Mental Health within HIV care guidelines", focusing on improving the Mental Health of People living with HIV.  

The aim of the webinar is to increase awareness of the need for updated HIV care guidelines to include more detail on mental health. EATG is currently looking for experts who are willing to share their experiences during the webinar as a speaker.

WAVE publishes article on comorbidities and menopause assessment in women living with HIV

The EACS Women Against Viruses in Europe (WAVE) article "Comorbidities and menopause assessment in women living with HIV: a survey of healthcare providers across the WHO European region" was published on 15 June, 2023. 

 

The article was based on a survey of 121 HIV healthcare providers in 25 World Health Organization European countries to ascertain screening practices for, and management of, menopause, psychosocial and sexual well-being and age-related comorbidities in women with HIV.

Upcoming webinar on Stigma: what you as a healthcare provider can do to address it

On 14 June 15:00-16:00 CET, the European Centre of Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS) and Centre of Excellence for Health, Immunity and Infections (CHIP) are hosting a webinar on ‘Stigma: what you as a healthcare provider can do to address it’ that aims to increase general practitioner and nurse knowledge and awareness of what stigma is, how it impacts patient health in the areas of HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections, and how it can be addressed in general practice.

 

This webinar is targeted towards nurses and physicians in general practice settings, but open for all to attend.   Click here to register.
