Career development fellowship

The Career development fellowship allows young HIV physicians in training to develop their research and clinical careers through a mentorship from experienced physicians/scientists/researchers.

The programme aims to link an HIV physician in training with an established European key opinion leader, over a period of 12 months, to facilitate mentorship and help career progression.

The fellowship programme will be based on specific objectives set by the mentor and the fellow, and may take the form of:

a)     Launching a new research project

b)     Developing or moving to presentation/publication of an existing research project

c)      Acquisition of new clinical skills/areas of interest

d)     Development or improvement of a clinical service based on an audit or service review

List of mentors (in alphabetical order)

The fellowship supported by EACS, will include:

a) 12-month mentoring;

b) Attendance to the HIV Glasgow conference (10-13 November 2024) for the mentor and the fellow, including registration, economy flights and accommodation, to be able to meet face-to-face and identify the sessions that will help the fellow achieve their learning objectives; 

c)     An optional visit of 2 to 4 weeks for the fellow to the mentor’s host institution including return economy flights or train/coach journey, according to the EACS travel rules, and a per diem to support accommodation and sustenance costs. The amount of the per diem will be defined according to the duration of the visit.

       

At the end of the 12-month period, the fellow will be expected to produce a short report and demonstrate achievement in the form of an HIV-related abstract at an international scientific meeting, publication in a peer-reviewed journal and/or a Quality Improvement Clinical Project. 

Eligible candidates must meet the following conditions:

a)     Be a physician currently working in the field of HIV medicine or an allied specialty (Internal medicine/infectious diseases/genito-urinary medicine, clinical virology)

b)     Be in a training post at the time of application, or have recently completed specialty training but be still in a fellow position or enrolled in a Ph.D. programme;

b)     Hold EACS membership;

c)     Be eligible for a working visa in the country of the host institution.

Note:

Pharmaceutical industry staff are not eligible for this programme.

It is the responsibility of the fellow to ensure necessary visa, permits and documentation before visit initiation.

Application procedure:

a)     Applicants will fill in the online application form including a work plan and provide a CV and a letter of recommendation from their head of department.

b)   Applications will be reviewed by the Steering Committee - Successful candidates will be matched with a mentor depending on objectives and area(s) of mutual interest.

c)    Once the mentor has approved, they will be put in contact.

d)  A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed by the EACS representative, the mentor, and the fellow. Details about the visit of the host institution and the conference attendance will need to be provided in the document.

More details about the procedure and the programme timeline

EACS support:

a) For the visit to the host institution, EACS will support return economy flights or standard-class train/coach journey to the host institution, according to the EACS travel rules. The fellow will be entitled to a per diem to support accommodation and sustenance costs for a maximum of 28 days. It will be defined according to the duration of the visit. The fellow will be reimbursed upon confirmation of arrival at the host institution. 

b) For the attendance at the HIV Glasgow conference, EACS will support return economy flights or standard-class train/coach journey to Glasgow. Travel will be reimbursed after the conference according to the EACS travel rules. EACS will also support registration and accommodation for the duration of the conference.  

c) EACS will provide a letter of invitation for the embassy of the host country if a visa is needed. 

d) A certificate of completion will be delivered to the fellow after receiving the end-of-programme report (within 30 calendar days after the completion of the programme) and evaluation. 

Travel & accommodation rules

Responsibilities of the mentor:

a)  Attend the HIV Glasgow conference with the fellow;

b)  Arrange your own travel and hotel accommodations for the HIV Glasgow conference (expenses will be reimbursed according to the EACS travel rules).

c)  Welcome the fellow for 2 to 4 weeks in own institution (Optional);

d)  Support the fellow for 12 months and supervise the objectives of the programme;

e)  Complete brief forms when requested by EACS.

What is expected from the fellow:

a)  Take responsibility for obtaining visas and necessary permissions for the visit to the mentor’s institution and for attending the HIV Glasgow conference; 

b)  Attend the HIV Glasgow conference with the mentor; 

c)  Arrange your own travel and hotel accommodations for the HIV Glasgow conference (expenses will be reimbursed according to the EACS travel rules).

d)  Organise own arrangements for the visit of the mentor’s institution (if relevant) (reimbursed according to the EACS travel rules); 

e)  Produce a short report and demonstrate achievement in the form of an HIV-related abstract at an international meeting, publication in a peer-reviewed journal and/or a Quality Improvement Clinical Project; 

f)  Complete brief forms when requested by EACS; 

g)  Have health and public liability insurance.
