10th International Symposium on HIV and Neuropsychiatry
The International Symposium on HIV and Neuropsychiatry (http://neuropsychiatry-hiv.com/) is an international CNS-HIV meeting that has been held annually in Barcelona (Spain) since 2008. It has been organised by the psychiatrist Dr Jordi Blanch and by the infectologist Esteban Martinez. The 10th edition was held on 26-27 May 2017.
This well-established international meeting with few competitors in its field aims at reaching 100 attendees interested in neuropsychiatric health of HIV-infected patients. We work to continuously improve the format and the content of the meeting based on the suggestions from attendees. Neurocognitive and psychiatric aspects of HIV care are of paramount importance. There are many gaps of knowledge and many controversies. New challenges arise when solutions for old problems emerge. The goal of this symposium is to give access to the most updated information in these fields and make practical recommendations that will be useful in the clinical setting.
The symposium had plenaries on hot topics, oral communications and posters (depending on demand). The faculty included Johannes Schroeder, Ignacio Perez-Valero, Jose Antonio Muñoz-Moreno, Piercy Fernandez, Jose Luis Blanco, Larry McGlynn, Andrea Calcagno, Paola Cinque, and Scott Letendre. Further details on the event and programme can be checked on the website http://neuropsychiatry-hiv.com/.
In this edition, we established a special formative session addressing young doctors caring for HIV-infected patients with limited experience in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of CNS problems in this population. The session entitled "Practical Training on Diagnosis and Management of Neurocognitive and Psychiatric Comorbidities in HIV-Infected Patients"covered approximately 3 hours, on Thursday, 26 May 2017. Together with a team of doctors and psychologists we organised engaging presentations to drive open discussion with audience, with 4 topics at the centre:
1. Diagnosis and screening of neurocognitive impairment in HIV-infected patients (45 minutes)
2. Prevention and treatment of neurocognitive impairment in HIV-infected patients (45 minutes)
3. Diagnosis and screening of psychiatric conditions in HIV-infected patients (45 minutes)
4. Prevention and treatment of psychiatric conditions in HIV-infected patients (45 minutes). Regarding "Practical Training on Diagnosis and Management of Neurocognitive and Psychiatric Comorbidities in HIV-Infected Patients", members for the neurocognitive team were Scott Letendre, Paola Cinque, Andrea Calcagno, Jose Antonio Muñoz-Moreno, Gabriele Arendt, Magnus Gisslen, Alan Winston, and Esteban Martinez; and for the psychiatric team they were Larry McGlynn, Guida da Ponte, José Catalán, Annemiek Schade, Maria Ferrara, and Jordi Blanch.
The whole symposium and specifically the special formative session obtained the support from both the Spanish Group for the Study of AIDS (GESIDA) and the European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS). The event had medical credits granted from Spanish and European Agencies.
